Configuring Gtalk on Pidgin and Empathy is a common topic of query for many people. So I decided to write this post.
Pidgin:
1. Select Manage Accounts from Accounts.
2. Click Add....
3. Under tab Basic,
i) Protocol-> Google Talk
ii) Username-> your Gmail username (i.e., without @gmail.com)
iii) Password-> your Gtalk password
iv) Rest are optional.
4. Under tab Advanced,
i) Check Require SSL/TLS & Force old (port 5223) SSL
ii) Connect port-> 443
iii) Connect server-> talk.google.com
iv) Take the default for others.
5. Under tab Proxy,
i) Select HTTP and enter the proxy Host & Port.
ii) Leave Username & Password blank.
iii) Select No Proxy if not applicable.
6. Click Save.
Empathy:
1. Go to Edit-> Accounts.
2. Click Add.
3. Select Google Talk from the drop- down list.
4. In the window that appears next, enter your Gmail Login ID & Password.
5. Click Connect.
Note that Empathy does not support proxy, so you cannot use it under proxy of any kind.
