Configuring Google Talk On Pidgin & Empathy

Configuring Gtalk on Pidgin and Empathy is a common topic of query for many people. So I decided to write this post.

Pidgin:

1. Select Manage Accounts from Accounts.

2. Click Add....

3. Under tab Basic,

i) Protocol-> Google Talk
ii) Username-> your Gmail username (i.e., without @gmail.com)
iii) Password-> your Gtalk password
iv) Rest are optional.

4. Under tab Advanced,

i) Check Require SSL/TLS & Force old (port 5223) SSL
ii) Connect port-> 443
iii) Connect server-> talk.google.com
iv) Take the default for others.

5. Under tab Proxy,

i) Select HTTP and enter the proxy Host & Port.
ii) Leave Username & Password blank.
iii) Select No Proxy if not applicable.

6. Click Save.

Empathy:

1. Go to Edit-> Accounts.

2. Click Add.

3. Select Google Talk from the drop- down list.

4. In the window that appears next, enter your Gmail Login ID & Password.

5. Click Connect.

Note that Empathy does not support proxy, so you cannot use it under proxy of any kind.

  2. @Megha: Doesn't need much, unlike Pidgin. Should work without much effort.

  4. @Sudipto: For Facebook chat: http://varshamyspace.blogspot.com/2010/02/facebook-chat-on-pidgin.html

    For Yahoo chat: if you are in NITDGP, it won't work, probably due to blocked port. I couldn't do it. I'll post as soon as I figure out. You can refer to the threads on:
